Babson Hosts 27th Annual President's Cup Golf Tournament
June 11, 2008
WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Babson College Athletic Department hosted its 27th annual President's Cup Golf Tournament at the beautiful Wellesley Country Club this past Monday, and for the second straight year the event proved to be a record-setting fund-raising effort for the department.
More than 140 golfers participated in this year's tournament, which featured 35 sponsors, including title sponsor Sodexo Food Services and Presidential sponsor Coclin Associates Inc. The event, which raised over $80,000 for the department, was won by the foursome of Tim Bertschman, Greg Bertschman, Joe Colelli, and Bill Stangel, who carded a team score of 64 in the "bramble" format. The first place team based on net scoring consisted of Joe Manning, Scott Papajohn, Alex Bernhardt, and Ross Dananberg of Pepsi, who finished with a net total of 50. Manning also won the "closest to the pin" competition, while recent hockey graduate John Geverd won the longest drive for the men and assistant basketball coach and alumna Jenn Gottberg recorded the longest drive for the women.
Another major highlight on Monday was the presentation of the Jon T. Barry Award to President Brian M. Barefoot '66 P'01. As a three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and tennis, a member and Chairman of the Board of Directors, and the College's 11th President, Barefoot has played an integral role in the growth and success of Babson athletics for nearly five decades. He has not only been an ardent supporter of the department, which led him and wife Pam to receive the Paul C. Staake Award at last month's Senior Banquet, but also of the President's Cup Tournament itself. During his seven-year tenure as President, the event has grown significantly, culminating in this year's record-high fund-raising total.
The Barry Award, named in memory of Jon T. Barry '65, is presented each year to an alumus or friend of the College who best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, presence, involvement, loyalty, sense of humor, sportsmanship, support, and volunteerism for Babson Athletics. One of the driving forces in the establishment of the award, President Barefoot now joins previous winners Chris "Doc" Troyanos, Carl Citron, Bob Kelly '81, Bill Glavin H'99, and Ron and Virginia Masnicki P'97 '00 as a recipient.
