Alexander Cards Beavers' Lowest Score Since 2009, Records Lowest Total in Relation to Par (-5) in Winning Newport National Classic
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine) became the first player to shoot 5-under par in a competitive round and earned medalist honors as the Babson College men's golf team won the Bentley University Newport National Classic on April 18 at the Newport National Golf Club.
After opening with a 75 in the morning round, Alexander carded five birdies and made no bogeys to match the Beavers lowest 18-hole total since 1992 with a 67 in the afternoon. His round matched 67s shot by Mike Sexton '10 on April 23, 2000, and Fernando Pineres '10 on September 20, 2009, as the lowest recorded score in program history.
With his 36-hole total of 2-under par, Alexander posted a two-shot victory over sophomore teammate Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.), who fired back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 for a 144 total. Ironically, Bornhorst joined Alexander as one of just four Babson players to shoot 67 when he made five birdies and just one bogey for a 4-under finish in the final round of the Tim Brown Invitational at Ballston Spa Country Club just four days later on April 22.
