BOSTON—Babson College rising junior Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) saw his run at the 110th Massachusetts Amateur Championship come to an end on Wednesday afternoon with a loss on the 19th hole in the first round of match play at George Wright Golf Club.

Bornhorst, who qualified for the state amateur for the third year in a row, was one of 32 players in a field of 144 golfers to reach match play for the first time. He made an early birdie on the par-5 third hole and held a 2-up lead after 10 holes. His opponent, 23rd-seeded Brian Bassett, made back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to take his first lead of the day before Bornhorst squared the match with a par on the 17th hole.

Both players pared the 18th and Bassett birdied the first playoff hole to pull out a 1-up victory.

Bornhorst, who earned Division III Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA)/PING All-America honorable mention honors back in June, was one of 11 players to finish at even-par or better over two rounds of stroke play at George Wright and William J. Devine Golf Club. He had three birdies and four bogeys on the way to a 1-over 71 in the opening round on Monday, and then made five birdies as part of a 1-under 69 on Tuesday that helped him to for sixth place at level par.
