Men's Lacrosse Falls to Wheaton, 18-8, in Pilgrim League Semifinal
NORTON, Mass.- Making their 10th consecutive appearance in the
Pilgrim League Tournament, the number three-seeded Babson College
men’s lacrosse team fell to host second-seeded Wheaton
College on Wednesday afternoon in the 2010 Pilgrim League
Championship semifinal round, 18-8.
Improving to 8-7 on the season, Wheaton will face the winner of
Wednesday night’s other semifinal between top seed
Springfield College and number-four Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) on Saturday at the highest remaining seed at 1:00
p.m. The Lyons seek their first league title, while Babson
finished its year at 10-7, the most wins since the 2003 season.
Wheaton turned a 5-5 game with less than 3:44 to play in the second
period into a 10-goal triumph, with junior Chris Landers
(Manchester, Mass.) pacing all scorers with six tallies.
Classmate Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass.) notched a hat trick while
assisting five goals, and senior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, Conn.)
turned in a pair of tallies and two assists.
Senior Tim Horan (Cheshire, Conn.) scored twice, sophomore Billy
McNamara (Mansfield, Mass.) had a goal and two helpers, while
senior Warren Garceau (Guilford, Conn.) went 20-for-27 on
face-offs. Classmate Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, Conn.)
finished with 15 saves.
Babson first-year Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.)
led the Beavers with four goals and two assists, classmate
James Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) contributed two
tallies, and senior goalie Mike Saucier (Nashua,
N.H.) was credited with 12 stops.
Junior Christian Ebert (Boxford, Mass.)
led Babson defensively with five groundballs.
Babson and Wheaton traded the game's first six goals, leaving the
score knotted at three 55 seconds into the second quarter after
Landers tallied for a second time. Babson’s first goals of
the game came from junior Andrew Packer (Hudson,
Ohio), Patinkin and Schmidt. The goal by Landers sparked a
3-0 Wheaton run over 5:42, giving the hosts a 5-3 edge, but the
Beavers answered with a pair of scores 1:02 apart to knot the game
at five. A half-ending 3-0 Lyon run during the last 3:14 gave
the Blue and White an 8-5 advantage at the break.
Schaffer had a hand in Wheaton's initial two third-quarter goals,
assisting Landers at 12:18 before finding the back of the net at
9:49 for a 10-5 edge. Two Patinkin tallies were sandwiched
around a Lyon goal and the Beavers trailed 11-7, but Wheaton took
its largest lead of the game up until that point with a pair of
scores to end the period, as Cederberg played a role in both.
After the two teams exchanged goals to open the fourth, shifting
the score to 14-8, the hosts closed the contest with a 4-0
spurt. Horan scored twice during the run, while sophomore
Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass.) recorded Wheaton's third man-up
tally.
