Men's Lacrosse Opens 2013 Season with 14-9 Win at Skidmore
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Babson College men's lacrosse team opened its 2013 campaign with a big road win on Saturday, as the Beavers took down host Skidmore College, 14-9, in the snow at Wachenheim Field.
Babson's triumph featured a game-high four goals from sophomore Phil Russo, as well as two goals apiece from senior captain Scott Schachter and sophomore transfer Kyle Barsalou. Senior captain Alex Patinkin had one goal and three assists, and senior goalie James Whalen turned away 11 shots in net. Junior long-stick middie Ryan Dawidjan led all players with 14 groundballs, while sophomore Christian Cattaruzza and Russo each contributed five others.
The Beavers got on the board first when Barsalou snuck a shot past Skidmore goalie Matt Diaco 53 seconds into the contest, but the Thoroughbreds answered with three straight strikes to take a 3-1 lead after one.
Babson came storming back in the second behind Russo, who scored off his own face-off win just six seconds into the period before adding another goal 18 seconds later to tie the game at 3-3. Schachter then tacked on his first of the game for a 4-3 Beaver lead, but the Thoroughbreds answered with three of the game's next four markers to move back in front, 6-5.
After Schachter closed the second quarter with his second goal of the day to even the score at 6-6, Barsalou and first-year Brendan Coan sandwiched goals around a Skidmore strike to give Babson a 7-6 lead heading into the final quarter of play. The hosts scored first in the fourth, but it would be all Beavers from that point on, as the Green and White netted six of the game's final seven goals to run away with the 14-9 win. Russo keyed the outburst with two more scores, while Patinkin, sophomore Alex Bunick, junior Mike McStravock, and first-year Scott Doten also found the back of the net.
Diaco had 16 saves in goal for Skidmore.
