Men's Lax Rallies Past ECSU, 11-8, For Best Start Since 1997

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior captain Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) scored six goals, including four during a 6-0 run to end the game, as Babson College came from behind to defeat visiting Eastern Connecticut State University, 11-8, in a matchup of regionally-ranked men's lacrosse teams at MacDowell Field on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Beavers, ranked eighth in the region in the most recent New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) poll, start the season at 3-0 for the first time since 1997.

After Patinkin scored this second goal of the day with 51.7 seconds left in the second quarter to give Babson a 4-3 edge at the half, Eastern Connecticut State (1-2, ranked 10th in the region by NEILA) opened the third quarter with a 5-1 run to take its first lead of the day. Juniors Mike Devine (Cheshire, Conn.) and Trevor Morrissette (Bedford, N.H.) each struck twice during the burst, which gave the Warriors an 8-5 advantage with 7:17 left in the period.

It would be all Babson from that point on, as the hosts scored the final six goals of the contest to claim the 11-8 victory. Patinkin kicked off the run with a goal off a nice transition feed from sophomore Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) with 4:47 left in the third, and, after a Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.) marker made it 8-7 at 4:20, the senior captain struck again with an unassisted tally with 37.7 seconds left in the session, tying the game at 8-8.

The assault continued into the fourth and final quarter of play, with Patinkin taking a pass from first-year Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) and firing a rocket inside the right post for the go-ahead goal at 10:09. Senior goalie James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) then preserved the lead with three huge saves in the next five minutes, including back-to-back stops on consecutive bids by senior Kevin Fechtmann (Levittown, N.Y.) and Morrissette with just over five minutes remaining. Moments later, junior Mike McStravock (Windham, N.H.) gave the Beavers some breathing room with a low shot that found the back of the net at 4:22, and Patinkin tacked on his sixth goal of the day and 13th of the season at 2:59 to complete the 11-8 win.

Whalen finished with 15 saves in net for Babson, while junior Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester, Mass.) led all players with 11 groundballs. Bunick and sophomore Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) combined for 11 groundballs and six caused turnovers for Babson, which held a 41-37 advantage in shots while winning 15 of 23 faceoffs.

GAME NOTES: This was Babson's first win over Eastern Connecticut State since 2005, snapping a run of 11 consecutive Warrior victories.
