Colby Slips Past Men's Lacrosse, 8-6
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior midfielder Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) led six different players in the scoring column with two goals and two assists as visiting Colby College turned back Babson College, 8-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With its second straight win Colby moves to 4-2 on the year while Babson dropped its fourth straight game and is now 3-4.
Senior Garth Franklin (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and sophomore John Grimaldi (Manchester, Mass.) each scored twice while senior Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Chip Grossman (Charlottesville, Va.) both chipped in with a goal and a pair of assists for the Mules.
Seniors Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) and Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Beavers with a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomores Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) and Kyle Barsalou (Longmeadow, Mass.), and first-years Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) and Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) all tallied once.
Barsalou opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season just 1:12 into the first quarter to give Babson an early 1-0 before Colby countered with a pair of tallies just 1:44 apart from Deveau and Franklin to grab a 2-1 advantage with 3:19 left in the opening stanza. Low won the ensuing face off and fed Russo, who notched his sixth goal of the year, just 12 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2 before the Mules started a three-goal run, and took the lead for good, on Deveau's man-up score off a feed from Grossman with just 47 seconds left in the period.
Franklin extended the Colby lead 3:19 into the second quarter as Franklin notched his ninth goal of the season to take a two-goal lead and Grimaldi followed with a man-up goal with 5:26 left before halftime to give the Mules their biggest lead of the opening half at 5-2. Patinkin came right back with a man-up goal for the Beavers just 44 seconds later to trim the deficit to 5-3 heading into halftime.
The teams' traded tallies in the opening 3:43 of the third quarter before Grossman scored Colby's third man-up goal of the game with 9:30 left in the stanza, followed by McKillop's fifth goal of the year just 13 seconds later, to take its biggest lead of the game at 8-4. The defenses took over from there as neither team scored for nearly 19 minutes before Coan and Griffin scored late goals for Babson to cut the Mules' lead to two with 2:16 remaining in the contest.
Senior James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made eight stops for the Beavers while junior Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped 11 shots to earn the win for Colby.
Junior Ryan Dawidjian (Worcester, Mass.) and Russo each picked up a team-high four groundballs and junior Brett Rosen (Kinnelon,N.J.) caused a game-high five turnovers for the Beavers. Senior Bjorn Knutson (Bloomington, Minn.) picked up a game-high eight ground balls and junior Buddy Reed (Woolwich, Maine) and first-year Kenny Jacobson (Duxbury, Mass.) each grabbed three ground balls for the Mules.
Babson is back in action on Saturday afternoon when they open up Pilgrim League play at Massachusetts Maritime at 3:30pm while Colby returns home to face Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.
