BABSON PARK, Mass.—Visiting Bowdoin College opened a seven-goal first-quarter lead on the way to defeating Babson College, 19-8, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field.
Babson, which has dropped four straight games, is 2-4 on the year, while Bowdoin improved its record to 3-1 overall.
Sophomore Alex Lesher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored three times and senior Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) notched the 100th goal of his career and tacked on an assist for the Beavers. Sophomore Jack Tague (Fairfield, Conn.) scooped up nine ground balls and caused a game-high four turnovers, junior Tyler Patterson (Millstone Township, N.J.) finished with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers, and first-year Austin O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) came off the bench to make a career-high 12 saves in 34 minutes of action.
First-year Chris Fowler (Summit, N.J.) led all players with four goals, senior Jeff Powers (Cohasset, Mass.) scored three times and rookie Will Murtagh (Marblehead, Mass.) had a goal and four assists to lead the Polar Bears. Senior Sam Carlin (New Albany, Ohio) won 20-of-25 face-offs and scooped up 15 ground balls, while junior Jack O'Connor (Stamford, Conn.) stopped six shots to pick up his third victory of the season.
Carlin won 8-of-11 first-quarter face-offs and Fowler contributed two goals as Bowdoin scored seven times in the span of 5:01 to build a 7-0 lead with 4:15 to go in the opening stanza. Junior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) and Mishkind scored late in the first, senior Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) notched a man-up tally 32 seconds into the second, and sophomore Quinn Schomp (Duxbury, Mass.) contributed his first marker of the year to pull the Green and White within 9-4 with 9:55 to go until halftime.
The Beavers were down 11-5 at the half after a late goal by junior Thomas Calvert (Melrose, Mass.), but the Polar Bears won five of six third-quarter face-offs and outscored the hosts 5-0 in the frame. Sophomore Reed Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) and classmate Nick Iznaga (Jupiter, Fla.) gave Bowdoin its biggest lead of the game at 18-5 three minutes into the fourth before Lesher put away three late goals for Babson.
The Beavers return to action next Tuesday in Florida when they takes on Vassar at the University of Tampa at 6:30 p.m. Bowdoin will host Hamilton on Saturday at 1 p.m.
• The Beavers, who have not beaten Bowdoin since 1981, are 2-21 all-time against the Polar Bears.
• Mishkind is one of eight players in program history to reach the 100-goal milestone, and with two points on Wednesday he passed Austin Fabel '18 for 14th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 117 points.
• The 19 goals allowed on Wednesday are the most Babson has given up since suffering a 19-8 loss at Springfield in the Pilgrim League Tournament final back in 2011.
• The Beavers have now scored at least one man-up goal in every game this season.
