GENEVA, Ohio—Babson College junior John Decker (Parkland, Fla.) shattered his own school record and became the first athlete in program history to qualify for the finals at the NCAA National Championships on Friday afternoon at SPIRE Institute.
Decker won his heat and finished second overall in the 20-man field with a time of 1:50.48 in the 800-meter run. The performance trimmed a half-second off his previous mark set at the NEICAAA Championships back on May 6 and helped him earn one of nine spots in Saturday's final.
Decker, who is already the most accomplished athlete in school history, posted the fastest time of any competitor over the final 400 meters on Friday.
Saturday's 800-meter men's final is set for 2 p.m. at SPIRE Outdoor Stadium.
