Meet Preview: Cross Country at the Smith Invitational

THE SETUP
• The Babson College men's and women's cross country teams return to the Smith Invitational for the fourth time since 2012 on Saturday morning.
• The men will compete in their first 8k race of the season, while the women's will tackle the 5k.

LAST TIME AT THE SMITH INVITATIONAL
• Senior Matthew Dynan paced his way to a 27:41 8k to finish on top for the second time in as many meets and the Babson men's and women's cross country teams had six harriers finish in the top 20 of their respective races on September 10, 2016, at the Smith Invitational.
• The men came in second overall with 44 points, finishing just four points behind Coast Guard, while the women came in eighth scoring 207 points.
• Senior Chaela Hood placed 18th to finish as Babson's top female runner on the day, running 21:43 in the 5K race.

SCOUTING THE BABSON WOMEN
• The Beavers fell to Wheaton, 37-21, in their season-opening 2-mile dual meet last Friday.
• First-year Hannah Piispanen placed third on the women's side to lead the Beavers, while classmate Vivian Lehman came in right behind her in fourth place.
• Babson returns nine harriers from the 2017 season, led by junior Stephanie Rodriguez, who finished 24th at the league meet.

SCOUTING THE BABSON MEN
• The Green and White was defeated by Wheaton, 34-22, last Friday in its season-opening 5k.
• First-year Collin Regan placed second in the men's race in his collegiate debut to finish just ahead of sophomore Zach Goldberg (4th) and classmate Joseph Marwill (9th) to give the squad three top-10 finishers.
• The Green and White brings six harriers, highlighted by Dynan, who placed fourth at the NEWMAC Championships to earn his second consecutive all-conference award and placed 34th to earn all-region honors at the NCAA New England Championships last November.

SETTING THE STANDARD
• The men's squad recorded its lowest point total since 1995 at last season's conference championship, while the women's team recorded its best finish since 2011 at both the NEWMAC and regional championships last fall.

ROOKIES NO MORE
• Goldberg, the lone sophomore on the men's team, finished fourth on the team with an average 8k time of 28:02 as a rookie in 2017. The women's squad also has six sophomores back, which includes Camille Lewis who recorded a career-best time in the 5k at the NEWMAC meet, and the trio of Emma Cavanaugh, Caroline Winicki and Grace Regan who all posted new PRs in the 6k at the NCAA regional championship.
