Women's Hoops Subdues MIT, 59-29

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Babson used a 16-3 run over the final 7:38 of the first half to pull away from visiting MIT on Wednesday night, as the Beavers went on to defeat the Engineers, 59-29, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Staake Gymnasium. With their ninth win in a row, the Beavers upped their overall record to 17-3 and remained unbeaten in the conference at 13-0. Meanwhile, MIT fell to 4-15 overall and 2-11 in the NEWMAC.
Babson was led by sophomore Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.), who scored 12 points, grabbed boards, and dished out four assists, and first-year Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.), who finished with 10 points, five boards, and three blocked shots. Sophomore Michelle Kenel (Rockaway Beach, N.J.) chipped in with eight points and three assists, junior Damisi Adewumi (Bronx, N.Y.) amassed six points and six caroms, and sophomore Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) added four points and seven rebounds.
MIT was led by first-year Aparna Sud (Wellesley, Mass.), who celebrated her homecoming with 10 points and five rebounds. Senior captain Sally Simpson (Minneapolis, Minn.) added five points and five boards, while first-year Lauren Sascha Burton (Seattle, Wash.) contributed four points and five assists.
Babson appeared to be pulling away in the opening eight minutes, building a 15-6 lead after a jumper by Adewumi with 12:19 remaining. However, Sud knocked down a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 MIT run as the Engineers pulled back to within two, 15-13, with 7:54 on the clock.
The Beavers would control the contest from that point on, going on a 16-3 run, including 10 straight points to close the period, as they took a commanding 31-16 lead into the break. MIT would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way as Babson earned the 59-29 victory.
