LAKE LYTAL, Fla. -- Juniors Anna Collins and Kaitlyn Pettengill combined for 14 points to lead the eighth-ranked Babson College women's lacrosse team to a 17-12 victory over Messiah College in Florida on Thursday. With the win, the Beavers snap a brief two-game slide to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Collins continued her brilliant junior season with another stellar performance on Thursday, scoring a game-high seven goals to go with five groundballs and three draw controls. Pettengill added six goals and one assist for seven points, first-year Trisha Babson chipped in with two goals, one helper, and a team-high five draw controls, and senior captain Jackie Godfrey contributed one goal and two assists in the win. Senior captain Lindsay Bucci rounded out the team's scoring with a goal, and sophomore Sarah Macary finished with eight saves in net.
Messiah was led by Rachel Dirksen, who posted six goals and one assist, and Megan Bovenzi, who added three goals. Jen Venter played the entire game in net, making 12 saves.
Collins and Babson combined to score their team's first five goals as the Beavers jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage. The Green and White continued to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the first half, eventually taking a 9-3 cushion after a goal by Bucci just before the break.
Pettengill and Collins each scored twice during a 5-2 run to start the second half, giving Babson a 14-5 lead with 22 minutes left. Messiah answered with three straight scores to make it a 14-8 affair, but Pettengill and Collins each struck again to push the Beavers' advantage to 16-8 with 9:50 to go. Messiah would close the game with a 4-1 run, but it would not be enough to prevent the 17-12 Babson victory.
