#12 Beavers Storm Past Mount Holyoke, 21-6
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Babson College women's lacrosse team, ranked 12th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll, cruised to a 21-6 victory over Mount Holyoke College Friday evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the Beavers sixth straight win over their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals.
Junior Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) racked up 11 points on five goals and six assists for Babson, which found the win column for the fourth time in a row. The midfielder finished with game highs of six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Babson also received a boost from senior attacker Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.) and junior midfielder Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.), who tallied six points apiece. Bucci amassed three goals and three assists. Meanwhile, Collins found the net four times and added a pair of helpers. Junior midfielder Alyssa Hood (Newport, R.I.) chipped in with four goals for the Beavers, who outshot Mount Holyoke 36-15 in the contest.
Leading the way for the Lyons was junior midfielder Peggy Wefald (Granger, Ind.), who recorded four goals. Senior midfielder Ava Gottschall (Amherst, Mass.) accounted for the team's remaining two tallies. Mount Holyoke finished with a 15-14 advantage in draw controls.
Wefald got the hosts on the board less than four minutes into the game. The lead stood until the 19:57 mark, when Collins tallied Babson's first goal of the day off an assist from Bucci. She found the net again just 34 seconds later to put the Beavers in front 2-1. Wefald struck for her second goal at the 18:53 mark to knot things up at 2-2, but Babson responded with three straight tallies to open up a 5-2 edge. Paced by four first half goals by Collins, the guests took a 10-4 edge into the break.
In the second half it was all Babson. The Beavers outscored Mount Holyoke 11-2 after the intermission to seal things. Hood and Pettengill both notched hat tricks in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mccary (Woodbury, Conn.) finished with four saves for the visitors. Her counterpart, sophomore Missy Hartley (Berthoud, Colo.), stopped nine shots in a losing effort.
Babson (6-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) will host Wesleyan University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and Mount Holyoke (3-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) will return to action on Wednesday, when it visits Connecticut College at 4:30 p.m Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules on Saturday, April 11.
