BABSON PARK, Mass. -- After a pair of overpowering victories against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponents, the Babson College women's lacrosse team had a pair of players garner league honors on Monday. Sophomore attack Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) was named the NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week, while senior midfielder Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) picked up league Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Secrist turned in two tremendous performances in a 2-0 week for Babson, totaling eight goals and three assists for 11 points to go with five groundballs, two draw controls, and three caused turnovers. On Tuesday, she tallied two goals - including the eventual game-winner - to go with two assists, two groundballs, one draw and one CT in a 20-3 win over MIT. Then on Saturday, she recorded six goals, one assist, three groundballs, another draw, and two CTs in a 20-13 victory over Smith. For the season, Secrist is jus tone point shy of the team lead with 36 goals and 11 assists for 47 points in 11 games.
In addition to her eight goals on offense, Spang had a great week in the midfield for the Beavers, recording a team-high 14 draw controls to go with four groundballs and one caused turnovers. In Tuesday's blowout win over MIT, she picked up five draws and two groundballs while causing a turnover. Then on Saturday, she tallied nine draw controls and two groundballs in the team's 20-13 victory over Smith. Spang now boasts a team-high 48 draw controls to go with 30 goals and 22 groundballs in 11 contests this spring.
At 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC, Babson will attempt to secure the top seed in the league tournament with two huge games this week. The Beavers will play at first-place Wheaton (5-0) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before hosting Mount Holyoke (2-2) this coming Saturday at 1 p.m.
