What I Did This Summer: Softball Rising Junior Jacqueline Paul

Hi! My name is Jacqueline Paul, I am a member of the softball team, and I am a rising junior. I am from Burlington, N.J., and over summer break I was lucky enough to intern for the Philadelphia Phillies. During my internship, I spent all my time at Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies play.

To give a little background, the stadium is roughly 25 minutes from my house, so the Phillies are the team that I grew up watching and cheering for. This opportunity came about when I went home for winter break and my hitting coach mentioned he knew the Director of Amateur Scouting, and that he would be able to get me an internship, if I was so inclined. While I was excited to be working for the Phillies, I was hesitant to accept the offer. It was not a typical 9-5 office internship, but instead I would work during the games to ensure the fans had the best overall experience.

Some of my daily tasks included making sure game day operations ran smoothly, meeting game day responsibilities, and planning and executing entertainment for theme nights and promotion nights. Each game day I would work with a different group of people, depending on the role I played that night, to make sure each of these events ran smoothly. I thoroughly enjoyed being at the stadium everyday and having the opportunity to watch most of the home games. Being in the atmosphere of a winning ball club and interacting with the fans were also both great opportunities

Although the entire internship was an amazing, there are two experiences that stand out to me the most. The first was overseeing the wiffle ball tournament with players from the 2008 World Series team. In the Phillies stadium, there is a wiffle ball field that was built during the 2017 offseason, in hopes of promoting a kid-friendly atmosphere. As part of the 10 year reunion of winning the World Series, several players from the '08 team were brought back and squared off in a wiffle ball home run derby. Watching and interacting with the players I cheered on 10 years ago was very cool.

The second experience that stands out to me was having the opportunity to step on the actual field. Twice this summer, once while setting up for Latino night and the other while setting up for a postgame concert, I was able to be on the field. While I have stepped on many ball fields during my years as a player, there was nothing like being on a field that is played on by a team as historic as the Phillies.

Although I look forward to going back to school, I will definitely miss heading to Citizens Bank Park on game days and cheering on the Phillies. This summer taught me a lot of things that I hope to bring back to Babson, as well as a small glance into an industry that I hope to be a part of one day.
