Women's Tennis Overpowers Bentley, 7-2
MEDFIELD, Mass. -- First-year Alex Freeman did not drop a game in her victory at number one singles as she helped the Babson College women's tennis team earn a 7-2 win over Bentley University in a non-conference match at the Kingsbury Club on Saturday evening. With their second win of the spring, the Beavers improved to 11-3 on the year, while the Falcons fell to 3-2.
Babson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in doubles play, as Freeman teamed up with sophomore Sarah Whitaker on an 8-3 victory at number one, senior captains Ashley Lake and Rebecca Stone combined for an 8-2 win at two, and first-years Minte Tamoshunas and Alexis Ferraro added an 8-2 victory at three.
The Beavers sealed the overall win with straight-set triumphs in the top three singles spots. Freeman overpowered her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at one, while Stone added a 6-0, 6-2 win at two and Tamoshunas coasted, 6-0, 6-3, at three. Rounding out the Babson scoring was senior captain Monica Mercer, who dropped her first set at four but rallied to win in a third-set superbreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5).
Bentley's to points came in the bottom two singles positions. First-year Melanie Scott won at number five, 6-1, 6-4, and junior Katie Van Gilst pulled out a 6-1, 7-5 victory at six.
