Women's Tennis Snaps Simmons' Win Streak With 9-0 Rout
BOSTON, Mass. -- The Babson College women's tennis team handed host Simmons College just its fourth loss the year on Saturday, as the Beavers notched a 9-0 victory over the Sharks. Snapping a three-match slide, Babson improved to 12-6 overall, while the Sharks saw their 12-match win streak come to an end as they fell to 12-4.
The Beavers opened with an overpowering doubles sweep, led by an 8-0 victory at by sophomore Sarah Whitaker and first-year Alex Freeman at number one. Senior captains Rebecca Stone and Ashley Lake remained red hot with an 8-1 victory at number two - a win that improved their season record together to 7-0 - and junior Victoria Lorido and first-year Courtney Fischer completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 triumph at three.
The Sharks offered little resistance in singles play, with Babson winning all six matches in straight sets. Freeman cruised at one, 6-1, 6-2, Whitaker prevailed, 6-3, 6-0 at two, Stone coasted at three, 6-3, 6-1, first-year Minte Tamoshunas earned her team-leading 16th win of the year, 6-3, 6-1, at four, senior captain Monica Mercer named a 6-3, 6-0 victory at five, and first-year Alexis Ferraro capped off the 9-0 rout with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win at six.
The Beavers wrap up their 2011-12 campaign next week, when they host Wesleyan University on Tuesday and Salve Regina University on Friday. Both matches will begin at 3:30 p.m.
