Volleyball Splits First Two Matches At Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Babson College volleyball team split its first two contests at the 2009 Brandeis Invitational on Friday night. The Beavers defeated Wentworth in their opening match, 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-11), before falling to Trinity, 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 16-25, 21-25).

The Babson offense was brilliant in the opener, hitting .378 as a team with 34 kills and only four errors. Sophomore Meg Flaherty led the way with nine kills and no errors on 21 attacks, junior Nina Milovanovic added seven kills and no miscues on 18 attempts, and senior captain Caitlin O'Neill chipped in with eight kills and only one error on 11 attacks. O'Neill also contributed four aces, while Flaherty posted two aces and 12 digs. First-year Kathleen Lynch continued her strong play with 28 assists, and first-year Cathy Tinker added four kills and two total blocks.

O'Neill was spectacular again versus Trinity, leading Babson with 11 kills and no errors on 24 attack attempts. Flaherty recorded 10 more kills and nine digs, while Milovanovic tossed in seven kills and nine digs. Lynch dished out 30 assists in the loss, and senior captain Becca Rydzik notched a team-best 17 digs.

Currently tied for fourth place out of nine teams at the two-day event, Babson will now face Tufts and Brandeis in back-to-back matches on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
