Women's Volleyball Opens Season with 3-0 Sweep of Mount Saint Mary

WALTHAM, Mass.—Junior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.), sophomore Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) and first-year Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) hit .462 while combining for 29 kills as the Babson College women's volleyball team eased to a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-9, 25-20) of Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at the Brandeis Invitational.

Roseen led all players with 11 kills, while Carosotto and Puccio recorded nine apiece to pace the Beavers, who hit .352 as a team. Sophomore Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led all players with 22 assists, while junior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) contributed a team-high nine digs. Fellow junior Catherine Hunter (Duxbury, Mass.) added four kills and five digs, and tied for match-high honors with three service aces.

Sophomore Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) had five kills, senior Chelsea Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) led all players with 13 digs, and junior Kim Gries (Fishkill, N.Y.) finished with 15 assists and five digs for the Knights.

The Green and White never trailed in the opening set, hitting .481 and recording 16 kills to take an early lead. Carosotto and Roseen both had two kills early in the second set as the Beavers built a 13-3 advantage on another kill by first-year Gaby Miller (Miami, Fla.). Babson hit .444 and had 14 kills in the frame on its way to taking a commanding two-set advantage.

The Beavers used a five-point run on the service of first-year Cassidy Witten (Honolulu, Hawaii) to jump in front 8-3 in the third set. A kill by Carosotto and two straight Mount Saint Mary errors extended the lead to 23-13 before the Knights made a late run to pull within five. Babson first-year Rachel Williams (Chicago, Ill.) stopped the spurt with a kill and the Green and White closed out the match on an error by the Knights.

Both teams return to action with a pair of matches at Brandeis on Saturday. Babson takes on Rhode Island College at 11 a.m. and closes out the weekend against Franklin at 1 p.m.
