NORTON, Mass.—Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, R.I.) scored 1:22 into overtime to help Wheaton College defeat visiting Babson College, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
Babson, which is winless over its last four matches, drops to 4-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play, while Wheaton improves to 4-2-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Scarlet Broderick (Middlebury, Conn.) scored her first career goal for the Beavers, while first-year goalkeeper Morgan Fedosiewich (Ottawa, Ontario) matched her season high with 12 saves in the loss.
Junior Hannah Lepordo (Sudbury, Mass.) had a goal and sophomore Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) chipped in with an assist for the Lyons, who got seven saves from senior goalkeeper Alex Barbagallo (Bridgewater, N.J.).
Following a scoreless first half that featured nine shots a side, Wheaton went in front in the 49th minute. Fedosiewich made a terrific save to push away a blast by Troy, but the Beavers failed to clear the ball and Lepordo's 22-yard chip shot snuck under the crossbar for a 1-0 advantage.
The Green and White pulled level on Broderick's tally in the 68th minute. Her left-footed corner kick sailed over Barbagallo and two defenders in the goal mouth and into the side netting. Fedosiewich recorded five of her eight second-half saves over the final 20 minutes to force extra time.
The Beavers nearly won the match less than an a minute into overtime, but sophomore Sydney McLaughlin's (Sherborn, Mass.) shot from inside 10 yards hit off the inside of the left post and through the goal mouth before being cleared out of danger. Following a build up down the left side Troy played a ball into the box for Rattenni, who eluded a defender and blasted a shot past the charging Fedosiewich for the game winner.
Wheaton outshot the Green and White 28-17 and finished with a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Union at 3:30, while Wheaton travels to Wellesley on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
