Balanced Attack Sends Women’s Volleyball to 3-0 Win Over Simmons

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Eight different players recorded at least two kills and senior Catherine Hunter (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) both finished with four total blocks to help Babson College defeat visiting Simmons University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) in non-conference women's volleyball action on Thursday night at Staake Gymnasium.

Babson, which has won five straight matches, improves to 16-5 overall, while Simmons dips to 8-11 on the year.

Senior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) finished with six kills, sophomore Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) added five kills and six digs, and senior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded a team-high 16 digs for the Beavers. Junior Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led all players with 13 assists, while sophomore Sabrina Lechner (Novato, Calif.) and first-year Juliette Pouille (Riveria Beach, Calif.) each added three blocks.

First-year Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) registered eight kills and eight digs, while sophomore Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) chipped in with three kills, eight assists and 10 digs for the Sharks. Classmate Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) led all players with 17 digs in a losing effort.

The Green and White never trailed in the opening set and put away eight kills while taking advantage of seven Simmons service errors to build a 1-0 advantage. Leading 13-11 in game two, Carosotto and Roseen combined for three straight kills to key an 8-2 run that extended the margin to as many as eight on another kill by sophomore Avery Tronson (Woodland Hills, Calif.).

Roseen put away a pair of kills and junior Emily Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) and first-year Samantha Hardan (Woodway, Wash.) each contributed an ace to help Babson get out to a 12-5 edge in the third set. The Sharks got as close as 18-13 thanks to a block by sophomore Megan Purser (Miami, Fla.) and first-year Krissy Lloyd (Tampa, Fla.), but the Green and White responded with kills from Lechner, Tronson and sophomore Rachel Williams (Chicago, Ill.) over its final seven points to put the match away.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Springfield at 7 p.m., while Simmons welcomes Norwich and St. Joseph's (Conn.) to Boston for a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
