BOSTON—Junior Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) led all players with 14 kills and 21st-ranked Babson College finished with a .340 hitting percentage in its three-set (25-14, 25-19, 25-14) win over Simmons College in non-conference women's volleyball action non Thursday night inside Moore Gymnasium.
With the victory, Babson improves to 9-0 on the year, while Simmons drops to 6-4 and sees its four-match winning streak come to an end.
Puccio made just one error and hit .419 on the night, while junior Gaby Miller (Miami, Fla.) recorded six kills in nine attempts for the Beavers. First-years Jordan Lapins (Calgary, Alberta) and Laura Zuloaga (Naples, Fla.) each added five kills, senior Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) dished out 27 assists, and junior Cassidy Witten finished with a team-high 11 digs in the win.
Sophomore Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) tallied seven kills and two blocks, junior Megan Purser (Miami, Fla.) added six kills, and classmate Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) doled out 22 assists to go along with eight digs for the Sharks. Junior Morgan Lauvray (Murrieta, Calif.) led all players with 14 digs in a losing effort.
The Green and White hit .462 in the opening set and used a 9-2 run that included three kills by Lapins and another from senior Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) to pull away for a 1-0 advantage. After trailing early in the second, the Beavers used a six-point run to go in front for good at 11-6. Simmons pulled within 18-16 on a kill by Purser, but Puccio and junior Sabrina Lechner (Novato, Calif.) combined for three kills while Carosotto served up a pair of aces as part of a 7-3 closing spurt to close out the set for a 2-0 lead.
Miller and Zuloaga both contributed three kills and Puccio added two of her own as Babson built a quick 12-3 lead in game three. After cutting their deficit to six at 17-11, the Sharks made four straight errors while Puccio recorded a pair of kills as the Beavers extended their margin back to 23-12 on the way to closing out the match.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Clark and Kean beginning at 11 a.m., while Simmons faces Lasell and Regis starting at 10 a.m.
• The Beavers are 19-7 all-time against Simmons and have won nine of the last 10 matches between the programs.
• Babson has recorded eight three-set victories during its 9-0 start.
